New York Amends Real Property Tax Law for Combat Zone Veterans

April 2, 2026, 8:42 PM UTC

The New York Governor signed a law amending the real property tax law, to provide a property tax exemption of up to 25 percent of assessed value (not exceeding $20,000) for residential property owned by members of the armed forces who served on active duty in combat zones. The law expands the definition of “armed forces” to include the Army and Air National Guard of the United States and New York naval militia, and clarifies application procedures requiring annual refiling to maintain the exemption. [S.B. 8790, enacted 03/27/26]
