New York State saw a spike in the number of taxpayers leaving the state at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, led by people fleeing New York City, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said in a new report.
One out of every 100 residents who file personal income taxes left the state in 2020, a fourfold increase from the year before, DiNapoli said. The surge was driven by an exodus in city residents, who made up 71.5% of the state’s net out-migration in 2020. Most who left that year were single filers.
