New York Publishes Notice of Prepaid Sales Tax Rate Change for Cigarettes

The New York Department of Taxation and Finance July 23 published an important notice on an increase in the prepaid sales and use tax rate for cigarettes. The department provided that: 1) effective Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2021, the rates are $0.91 for a pack of 20 cigarettes and $1.11 for a pack of 25 cigarettes; 2) the increase is based on the annual review of manufacturers’ list prices; and 3) the base retail sales prices effective Sept. 1 are $11.327 for a pack of 20 cigarettes and $2.829 for each additional five cigarettes.
