Oklahoma Governor Announces SCOTUS Affirms Oklahoma Authority to Tax Tribal Members

April 7, 2026, 7:58 PM UTC

The Oklahoma Governor announced that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision in Stroble v. Oklahoma Tax Commission, confirming that the McGirt decision does not extend to Oklahoma’s civil or taxing jurisdiction. The ruling maintains that tribal citizens living and working in eastern Oklahoma remain subject to the Oklahoma individual income tax. The Court affirmed that state tax obligations are not determined by race or tribal citizenship and that Oklahoma retains authority to impose income tax on tribal members outside of federally recognized tax immunity.
