Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee (D) proposed eliminating the state’s tax on Social Security benefits, creating its first permanent child tax credit, and lowering the gasoline tax in a bid to address affordability concerns.
McKee, who hasn’t released his formal budget request, made no mention of his warming support for imposing an additional income tax bracket on the top 1% of earners. The governor faces re-election in 2026 and an estimated budget deficit of at least $101 million in the fiscal year that begins in July.
