Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources Proposes Property Tax Regulations on Commercial Renewable Energy Systems

The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources Oct. 13 proposed to extend property tax regulations on commercial renewable energy systems tangible tax value. The proposal includes measures to: 1) extend the regulations through Jan. 1, 2026; 2) exempt renewable energy systems installed on residential and manufacturing properties from local taxation; and 3) require the office to determine whether to update the regulations by July 1, 2025. The purpose of the regulations is to provide consistent and foreseeable tax treatment of renewable energy to facilitate and promote the installation of grid-connected generation of renewable energy.
