Ryan LLC’s Contract Claims Against Gannett Booted From Texas

USA Today owner Gannett Co. convinced a Texas appeals court Thursday that breach of contract claims brought by its former tax services provider Ryan LLC can’t be heard in Texas courts.

Ryan’s allegations that Gannett owes it about $192,000 for helping it save over $2 million in taxes in Kentucky and Indiana lack a substantial connection to Texas, Justice Leanne Johnson wrote for the Texas Court of Appeals, Ninth District. Texas courts also lack general jurisdiction over Gannett because its affiliations with the state weren’t continuous and systematic enough to render it “at home” there, the court said.
