Senate Finance Member Offers Post-Wayfair Plan for Remote Sellers

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) has drafted a legislative discussion paper proposing ways to reduce sales tax collection burdens on remote vendors still facing challenges brought on by the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, she said at a Senate Finance Committee hearing Wednesday.

“I believe that the Wayfair decision was wrongly decided and should be reversed,” Hassan said. She added that Congress should require state governments to simplify and standardize sales tax laws for remote sellers, including “transparent” tax rates and consistent product definitions.
