State Tax Group Launches Project to Define Digital Products

A multistate initiative crafting uniform guidelines for taxing digital products will take on the task of broadly defining digital products for inclusion in state tax codes, leaders of the project said Tuesday.

The Multistate Tax Commission’s digital products work group will form a study group early next year to better characterize the wide range of digital products and services in commercial use. States could then decide whether to fit those descriptions into a framework adaptable to their sales tax codes, said work group chairman Tim Jennrich, senior assistant director of tax policy at the Washington Department of Revenue.
