Tennessee DOR Imposes Sales Tax on International Money Transfers Starting 2027

The Tennessee Department of Revenue (DOR) has published a sales and use tax notice, announcing that the service of transmitting money from a location originating in Tennessee to a location outside of the United States or its territories will be subject to sales tax, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The tax rate is $10 per transaction, with an additional 2 percent tax on amounts exceeding $500, and the tax applies only to entities licensed under the Tennessee Money Transmission Modernization Act.
