Texas AG Probes Possible Violations of Property Tax Limits (1)

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) is investigating several cities for potentially breaking a new law that limits how much they can raise property taxes if they haven’t met state audit requirements.

La Marque, Odessa, Tom Bean, and Whitesboro will be investigated to determine whether they broke S.B. 1851, Paxton announced Thursday. The law, which took effect Sept. 1, says that municipalities that are out of compliance with state auditing standards may only raise taxes enough to maintain the previous year’s revenue.
