Texas Nonprofit Didn’t Follow All Steps in Seeking Tax Exemption

A Houston nonprofit’s bid for a charitable property tax exemption was thrown out after an appellate court ruled the organization failed to exhaust all administrative remedies before suing.

The Texas Court of Appeals, Fourteenth District, on Thursday affirmed a lower court’s dismissal of Duncan House Charitable Corp.'s challenge to tax exemption denials from Harris County for tax years 2017 and 2018. The lower court lacked subject matter jurisdiction to hear the case, as Duncan House had filed an exemption application for tax year 2017 but never did for tax year 2018, the appeals court said.
