‘Uncertain Times’ Cloud California Finances, Budget Chair Says

A cloudy outlook for the global economy and a later-than-usual tax deadline has made it difficult to pinpoint California’s fiscal health in the coming year, one of state’s top budget negotiators said Wednesday.

“We are currently in uncertain times,” Assembly Budget Chair Phil Ting (D) said at a hearing examining Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed $223.6 billion general-fund spending plan for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. “We have a fiscal situation that we haven’t faced in quite a while, where we’re not really sure, exactly, the direction of the economy.”
