Utah Tax Commission Finds Taxpayer Established Reasonable Cause to Waive Property Tax Penalty

The Utah State Tax Commission Nov. 9 found that Taxpayers established reasonable cause to waive a penalty assessed for late filing of their property tax statement. Taxpayers, owners of a small company, appealed the penalty assessed by the Division of Taxation, for the late filing of the property tax statement for the 2023 tax year owing to financial problems. The commission noted: 1) Taxpayers had only one prior late filing over the course of many years; 2) Taxpayers didn’t request a waiver of the prior penalty; and 3) there were reasonable grounds for waiver of the penalty.
