Vermont Governor Makes Pitch for Sports Betting in Budget

Gov. Phil Scott proposed bringing sports betting and the Keno lottery game to Vermont, which he estimated would bring $4 million annually to the state. Twenty other states have already legalized sports betting.

  • The Republican governor made the proposal on Tuesday as part of his $6.3 billion fiscal year 2021 budget request. Lawmakers will consider Scott’s proposals as they try to finalize a budget before the new fiscal year begins July 1.
  • Most of the new betting revenue would be directed toward subsidizing child care in the state, Scott said during a budget address.
