Vermont Tax Department Releases Guidance on Short-Term Rentals

The Vermont Department of Taxes released guidance providing details on a new three percent surcharge on rents from short-term rentals, which is effective for rents collected on or after Aug. 1, 2024. The Department provides information on remitting the surcharge, reservations made before Aug. 1, 2024, the distinction between lodging establishments and short-term rentals, responsibilities for online platforms and independent operators, types of rentals subject to the surcharge, and information on the Meals and Rooms Tax and Local Option Tax.
