Virginia DOT Releases Guidance Explaining Retail Sales Tax on Accommodations

December 9, 2024, 12:55 PM UTC

The Virginia Department of Taxation (DOT) released guidance explaining to taxpayers the retail sales tax on accommodations, detailing that the booking of short-term lodgings such as hotel rooms and campground spaces is subject to Virginia sales tax. The tax applies to the total charge for the accommodation, including fees charged by booking agents and other reservation-handling companies, and is collected by either the accommodations provider or the accommodations intermediary, depending on whom the room was booked through.
