Virginia Tax Department Announces Individual Income Tax Filing Season Starts Jan. 24

The Virginia Department of Taxation Jan. 19 announced that the state and federal individual income tax filing season will start Jan. 24. The announcement provides that: 1) it generally takes up to two weeks to process an electronically-filed return and up to eight weeks or longer to process a paper return; 2) electronic filing meets strict security guidelines to protect taxpayers’ returns; 3) taxpayers are eligible to file their taxes for free if their income was $73,000 or less in 2021; 4) the department takes refund fraud seriously and encourages taxpayers to do the same; and 5) filing early helps ...
