Virginia Tax Department Releases Retail Sales and Use Tax Guidance

The Virginia Department of Taxation June 1 released a guidance document on retail sales and use tax. The guidance provides: 1) that the sales tax rate for most locations in the state is 5.3 percent; 2) the general sales tax rate for certain counties; 3) information on filing requirements and payment procedures; and 4) sales tax exemptions and exceptions.
