Walmart Asks Court to Stop California From Shifting Sales Tax Flow

Walmart.com and the California city of San Bruno asked a trial court to block the state tax department from giving $27.5 million in online sales tax revenue to other jurisdictions, saying their administrative appeal with the department is an “exercise in futility.”

The petition for writ of mandate, filed Oct. 20 in San Mateo County Superior Court, is the latest step in the dispute over the company’s 2020 decision to begin designating all sales to California customers on Walmart.com—including purchases from third-party merchants on Walmart Marketplace—as taking place in San Bruno.
