The Washington Department of Revenue (DOR) Jan. 30 announced that effective April 1, the local sales and use tax rate within Whatcom County increases by two-tenth of one percent (0.002). The tax will be used for criminal justice and public safety purposes. The announcement includes that: 1) businesses must collect sales tax at the appropriate new rate for retail sales and services provided within the county; and 2) the new rate of use tax will apply to individuals or businesses within the city on items purchased for their personal or business use if sales tax isn’t paid.
