West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey (R) signed legislation to lower personal income taxes by 5% and match tax breaks in the federal tax law championed last year by President Donald Trump.
The state can afford to issue the $230 million in annual tax relief thanks to “the fiscally responsible policies of the Morrisey administration,” the governor said in a press release Tuesday. Morrisey leaned on surplus revenue from the current budget year to fund the tax cut across income levels.
