Wisconsin Democrats Seek Veto of ‘Tax Break for Millionaires’

Democratic lawmakers are urging Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers to strip out a tax cut benefiting high-income taxpayers in the state’s proposed $99 billion budget.

The Republican-controlled Assembly late Thursday approved 2023-25 budget legislation, SB 70, ignoring Democrats’ objections to a plan to cut income taxes by $3.5 billion. The budget bill passed the Assembly on a 63-34 party-line vote after Senate approval a day earlier and now heads to Evers, a second-term Democrat. He has wide authority to either veto the entire budget or modify portions of it through his line-item-veto authorities.
