The Internal Revenue Service will need to prove to Congress why it deserves a boost in funding as lawmakers clash over its budget for the next fiscal year.
Funding the agency has been a political battleground in recent years, as Republican lawmakers have approved years of cuts and included provisions to restrict the agency in funding package. But IRS officials have repeatedly warned that funding is nearing dangerously low levels and future cuts could keep it from enforcing the tax code. The agency didn’t reply to a request for comment.
