Attorney’s Convictions Vacated in $18 Million Tax Evasion Case

A Houston attorney sentenced to prison for tax evasion had his convictions vacated by the Fifth Circuit, which ruled he was improperly deprived of a statute of limitations defense.

Jack Stephen Pursley was sentenced to 24 months in prison over a tax evasion scheme involving the repatriation of more than $18 million in untaxed income through his client’s shipping company, which had a bank account in the Isle of Man. Pursley received more than $4.8 million from the scheme, and did not declare the funds in his 2009 and 2010 tax years, according to the Justice Department.
