Two Missouri tax attorneys and an insurance agent from North Carolina were found guilty Thursday of operating a tax shelter that deprived the IRS of more than $4 million.
St. Louis attorneys Michael Kohn and Catherine Chollet, and Jefferson, N.C., insurance broker David Shane Simmons were convicted by a jury in the US District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. They face a maximum penalty of five years for a conspiracy charge and a maximum of three years for each charge of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns.
