BGOV OnPoint: Shutdown Risk Rises as Parties Split on Stopgaps

House Republicans passed a continuing resolution Friday to keep the government running past Sept. 30 amid broad Democratic opposition — only to later fail in the Senate.

The measure (H.R. 5371), passed by a 217-212 vote, would generally extend funding at current levels through Nov. 21, with extensions of other key programs set to expire at the end of the fiscal year, such as assistance for lower-income families and funding for community health centers.
