Biden-Era IRS Chief Danny Werfel to Join Alliant Board (1)

Former IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel is joining the strategic advisory board of alliant, a consulting firm with deep ties to the agency and Capitol Hill.

Werfel, who was former President Joe Biden’s appointee to lead the IRS, left the agency earlier this year after President Donald Trump signaled that he planned to cut Werfel’s term short. While at the IRS, Werfel was tasked with implementing the extra billions in cash the agency got in the 2022 tax-and-climate law to modernize, go after tax cheats, and improve customer service.

Alliant—which already houses former senior IRS officials, politicians, and congressional aides on its leadership team and advisory board—focuses on helping businesses receive various tax breaks.

“To the alliant family, Danny is the singular, perfect combination of all the things we strive for within our company,” alliant CEO Dhaval Jadav said in a news release. “His experience as IRS Commissioner, his consulting background, and his commitment to the growth and development of the United States align with our overarching goals and mission as an organization.

Werfel said he plans to move to a university in the Washington, DC area for his full time role and is also a fellow at Duke University focused on civil discourse.

“I’m deeply proud to be joining alliant’s Strategic Advisory Board and doing my part to grow what is already an impressive business,” Werfel said in a statement. “This is such a unique organization, but what attracted me was the steadfast commitment to American businesses and people.”

Since Werfel’s departure, the IRS has seen unprecedented turmoil with roughly half of its top leaders leaving and about a quarter of the agency signaling they plan to leave. Prior to joining the IRS in 2023, Werfel was a managing director and partner at Boston Consulting Group.

Alliant, formerly known as alliantgroup, was probed in 2022 by the IRS’s criminal investigation’s unit.
