President Joe Biden is requesting that Congress increase the Internal Revenue Service’s budget by more than 10% to help overhaul the agency’s aging IT systems and boost tax enforcement.
The full fiscal 2022 budget request, released Friday, would raise the IRS’s baseline funding to $13.2 billion—a 10.4%, increase over the 2021 enacted level—and provide an additional $417 million for enforcement. The funding increases Biden seeks are key to his broader economic strategy, which hinges on a mix of tax increases and the IRS being better-equipped to audit corporations and the wealthy.
