The House Ways and Means Committee approved legislation that would tax e-cigarettes, such as vaping devices, the same as tobacco products.
The bill (H.R. 4742) would place an excise tax equivalent to the $1.01 federal levy per pack of cigarettes on tobacco alternatives. The legislation is a response to a rapid increase in the use of vaping devices, particularly among teenagers and young adults. The legislation was approved by the committee 24-15 Oct. 23 and will now advance to a vote in the full House.
