A California gubernatorial candidate sued California’s secretary of state, claiming she violated his constitutional rights by denying him ballot access over disputed tax return requirements.
Green Party-candidate Rudolph “Butch” Ware filed the lawsuitagainst Secretary of State Shirley Weber on Monday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of California, alleging she improperly rejected his candidacy paperwork for the June 2026 primary election. California law requires gubernatorial candidates to submit both redacted and unredacted copies of their tax returns from the previous five years to qualify for the ballot.
Weber’s office declined to comment on Tuesday.
