The charitable giving sector is working to persuade lawmakers to boost donations with a deduction for those that don’t itemize, arguing a portion of the 2017 tax overhaul hampered giving.
That year’s GOP tax law raised the standard deduction, spurring fewer people to take itemized deductions such as that for charitable giving. At the time, lawmakers said it wouldn’t impact giving to charities.
Now, the sector is armed with data arguing the change did eat into donations and has recruited a bipartisan group of lawmakers to help their cause. They’re eyeing next year’s showdown over expiration of many 2017 provisions ...
