IRS Taps Into Power of AI

IRS spending on artificial intelligence rose by over 700% in the last half-decade as the agency hones the use of machine learning to identify tax cheats and improve taxpayer communication.

Bloomberg Government data indicates the agency’s spending on AI and machine learning totaled at least $60 million in fiscal 2024, and it’s expected to keep rising as the agency taps into billions of dollars from the 2022 tax-and-climate bill.

Though the IRS has divulged some details on how it’s using the new tech, lawmakers are staying focused on agency oversight.
