The Justice Department has asked a California court for permission to demand cryptocurrency records tied to unnamed taxpayers who have held accounts at Kraken, a digital currency exchange.

The petition for leave to serve a John Doe summons—which seeks records from a third party about unnamed taxpayers—on the cryptocurrency company was filed at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Tuesday. In a memo supporting the request, the government said the records would assist an IRS investigation into taxpayers who may not be properly reporting cryptocurrency transactions.
