Data Centers’ Customer Tax Info Can Be Sought by Virginia County

Fairfax County, Va., may investigate customers of an American Tower Corp. subsidiary that operates data centers to determine whether those customers pay taxes on their tangible personal property, but the county must identify the taxpayers in question, the state appellate court ruled Tuesday.

CoreSite LLC owns four data centers in the county and leases some of the space to confidential customers for equipment storage and use. CoreSite asked the court to find the county couldn’t seek information for its customers who may or may not be subject to county tax.
