A group of Senate Democrats are pushing a Treasury Department watchdog to investigate the Trump administration’s decision to fire thousands of IRS workers and its plans to close dozens of taxpayer assistance centers.
In a letter dated March 5, the lawmakers asked Heather M. Hill, acting inspector general at the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, to conduct an evaluation of whether the firings so far—along with future firings—have undermined progress made by the IRS to strengthen taxpayer services and enforcement.
