Democrats Urge IRS to Nix ID.me Use for Direct File Tool

The IRS shouldn’t require heightened identity verification for taxpayers using its free electronic filing tool that’s not required of private options like TurboTax, lawmakers said in a letter to the IRS and Treasury Department.

Direct File, the IRS-run filing tool, required taxpayers to authenticate their identity using ID.me for its pilot season in 2024. ID.me is the only provider the IRS can use that meets the standards set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
