Senate Democrats Escalate Oversight

Democrats on the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee are ramping up oversight efforts on multiple fronts.

The Department of Justice Tax Division is investigating promoters of dubious tribal tax credits, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said in a letter. Earlier this year, the panel’s minority sought a criminal investigation into the tax credits, which Treasury Department and IRS have said don’t exist.

Targets include White River Energy Corp. and third-party promoters, who have been selling the credits to wealthy investors, Bloomberg Tax first reported in December.
