DOJ Tax Saw ‘Writing on the Wall’ Ahead of June Chevron Ruling

The end of a legal doctrine empowering federal regulators won’t likely mean major changes for the Department of Justice Tax Division, an official said.

The Supreme Court in June overturned the Chevron doctrine, which said that federal courts should defer to agency interpretation of vague law. This ruling in Relentless v. Dept. of Commerce and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo followed calls from conservatives who said the Chevron principle gives federal agencies too much power.
