EU Countries Refuse Commission Representation at UN Tax Talks

EU countries balked at giving the European Commission permission to negotiate on their behalf at the UN, and will instead continue representing themselves.

The countries rebuffed the commission’s proposal Monday to represent the bloc in negotiating the UN’s workstream dealing with dispute resolutions as part of a broader effort to develop an international tax convention, according to people familiar with the matter.

EU countries have so far represented themselves at the UN talks, but the commission has played a coordinating role. EU countries have largely voted as a bloc.
