EU Floats ‘Financial Actions’ on Highly Processed Foods

The European Commission said Tuesday it could propose “possible financial actions” on ultra-processed foods high in sugar, fat and salt as part of a plan focused on preventing heart disease.

In the plan, the commission said those actions would depend on the findings of a study on ultra-processed foods and their health impact. The plan didn’t say when the study will be published.

“The Commission will continue to support Member States in advancing taxation by discussing the design and practical implementation of such measures applied to non-alcoholic beverages with Member States,” the plan said.
