EU Official Mulls Limiting Labor Movement to Protect Tax Base

The EU could try to stop people from moving away from Europe to ensure productivity and tax income, according to a top tax official for the bloc.

As the European Union looks to develop and maintain tax revenue streams, the bloc may “have to deploy policies that restrict” movement, according to Gerassimos Thomas, the head of the European Commission’s tax department.

“If we let everybody go to Tunisia or somewhere else to work, I think we will have more challenges,” Thomas said at an event organized by the European Business Tax Forum in Brussels on Tuesday.
