Facebook’s $9 Billion Tax Trial Resumes After Lengthy Break

Facebook’s tax battle with the IRS over the value of intangible assets the company shifted to an Irish subsidiary resumed Tuesday after a 16-month delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The opening day of the Washington-portion of the trial, held in-person under new virus safety protocols, included several hours of sealed testimony. In the public portion of the trial, the U.S. Tax Court heard testimony from technical consultants who had worked with Facebook, in which they described changes in the company’s technologies and uncertainties in the website’s mobile strategies from 2010 to 2018.
