A New York lawyer whose firm made a $500,000 “investment” in Tom Goldstein’s poker matches against real estate mogul Bob Safai in 2017 testified on behalf of the government at Goldstein’s tax evasion and false statements trial Wednesday.

I thought it would be a “fun, interesting investment,” Paul Napoli of Napoli Shkolnik PLLC told the jury.

Goldstein is facing one count of tax evasion, eight counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false and fraudulent tax returns, four counts of willful failure to pay taxes and three counts of making a false statement on a loan application. Among ...
