The IRS’s free electronic filing tool pilot cost $24.6 million, significantly below early estimates, as the agency confronts a critical turning point on the future of the government-run program.

Many taxpayers this filing season got a taste for the first time of what it’s like to file their tax returns for free with the IRS, and the government says it was a success. The 140,803 taxpayers who filed their returns using the Direct File option saved about $5.6 million in tax preparation fees on their federal returns, the IRS said Friday.
