Georgia Justices Question Retirement Home Use, Tax Exempt Status

Georgia Supreme Court justices pressed a health-care provider over whether its leased retirement home is exempt from more than $900,000 in property taxes, in oral arguments on Thursday hinging upon whether a public purpose is fulfilled.

An attorney for the Medical Center Hospital Authority told the court that its Spring Harbor Senior at Green Island facility is used for a public purpose, providing housing and health services for the elderly, and therefore is exempt from property tax.

The Columbus Board of Tax Assessors criticized the property for serving only the affluent and already healthy, thus not fulfilling a public purpose. ...
