Guyana to Tighten Online Gambling Regulation, Hike Taxes

Guyana will tighten regulations and introduce steep taxes on online gambling operations that have mushroomed across the country, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said in a news conference.

  • Decision was triggered by persistent complaints by religious communities and families that people have been spending their incomes on gambling instead of supporting their families and saving or investing
  • NOTE: Surinamese and Barbadian companies operate gaming shops in villages and towns across Guyana
  • NOTE: Guyana’s gambling legislation does not cover online gambling but regulates casinos at hotels only for registered guests
