The Senate has joined the House in leaving Washington until early September, after Republicans blocked the $78 billion business-and-child tax break bill that’s been languishing in the chamber following its swift bipartisan House passage earlier this year.
Republicans sank a procedural vote on moving the bill forward, with just three Republicans joining Democrats in favor of the legislation that would enhance the child tax credit and renew a trio of expired business breaks for research, capital expensing, and interest. Independent Sens. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.) also voted against the procedural step.
