Sen. Joe Manchin’s announcement that he will not support Democrats’ tax and social spending plans leaves the White House and Democratic leadership with few options to advance much of their economic agenda.

Manchin (D-W.Va.) had spent weeks negotiating with President Joe Biden over the broad economic legislation, which aimed to use a series of proposed tax hikes to offset new spending on health care, climate, and other priorities. But Manchin, during a “Fox News Sunday” interview, announced that he would vote no on the budget reconciliation package.
