HILL TAX BRIEFING: Elijah Cummings Remembered as Fierce But Fair

Lawmakers remembered Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who died yesterday, for his measured approach to investigations.

Cummings was assertive in questioning witnesses, but wasn’t over the top in his approach, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) said.

“He was always a man of the institution and a gentleman,” Neal said.

Cummings, 68, died after health complications. As the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, he was a key figure in the House’s impeachment probe into President Donald Trump. He was elected to Congress in 1996.
